Mokume Gane Rings

Japanese for “wood grain,” Mokume Gane rings have become more and more popular as engagement rings, although that wasn’t their original function. The metalsmith Denbei Shoami originally designed the Mokume Gane to be attached to samurai swords. These rings would denote the wealth and status of the samurai. The Mokume Gane rings were very distinctive since they were created using a very specific process. This process fused precious metal into very thin sheets that featured a distinct pattern. Each different alloy and metal used in the process was woven into the pattern of the band. Today, Mokume Gane rings often feature up to thirty or so sheets of metal. When all of these sheets go through the fusing process, they create a very beautiful engagement ring that won’t easily be overlooked.

There are several things that affect how a Mokume Gane ring looks. First is the metal. The color of the final ring depends on what metals are used in the pattern. Higher caret yellow gold, for example, will make the Mokume Gane ring more yellow, while adding rose gold will add more pink to the band. White gold, on the other hand, is woven into the pattern as a shade of gray. One of the unique things about Mokume Gane rings is that many are designed and created specifically for you, and you get to select which and how much of each type of metal is included in the final ring. You get to decide which hues are mixed together or, if you want a single color band, you can decide how much high and low caret metal is used.

Another part of the Mokume Gane ring you get to select is the pattern. You can select the rivers pattern if you want waves in the band, a criss cross pattern if you like intersecting lines, and more. While the designer creates this design when he or she creates the ring, there’s always some randomness to the pattern, so your Mokume Gane ring truly is one of a kind.

You also have the option of setting a gemstone on your Mokume Gane ring, although this is done fairly rarely since the design of the ring itself is more than enough to make it unique and different.
